HOMEBOY

Short documentary, 21', 2017

Almost every single day, from noon until midnight, Homeboy goes bottom-fishing in front of Grenada’s west coast - whether the fish are biting or not.

Director's note:

We met Homeboy in Grenada while trying to shoot a documentary about a very different—and very elusive, it turned out—person. Fruitlessly waiting for this subject to show up, we decided to focus our attention on the people around us. One of them was Homeboy, a very withdrawn but nonetheless remarkable fisherman. Fresh out of film school, my approach was to try and dig into his thoughts and emotions, but Homeboy resisted—and it was as if the sun itself was trying to obscure my gaze. Shot in 2014, it wasn't until 2017 that I managed to see, with the help of Roel's accompanying music, the beauty in these images, and in my own naivety.
